‘Roasting’ took on another meaning in the second episode of season 2 of MasterChef Singapore when an unexpected special guest joined the recording via video call from the UK.
Judge Bjorn Shen called it “an internet sensation who challenges the authenticity and heritage of Asian dishes.”
The man, Shen added, is known for “mentioning the dishes of some of the biggest names in the culinary world.” Even luminaries like Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsey weren’t spared!
But after the accumulated hype and excitement, it all fell apart when, in the middle of his limited screen time, our favorite uncle was relegated to contest announcements that included time checks and a silent smile on a television screen.
The other half of her screen time … well, I love Uncle Roger and maybe even his real-life alter ego Nigel Ng, but this niece wasn’t laughing. Some of their ‘roasts’:
– To flight attendant Mitchelle Chua: “You are so confident. You think you are going to win the trophy because the trophy has ‘M’ on it. I like Uncle Roger. I like this confidence.”
– To Operations Manager Danial Khalis Aziz: “I heard you have a newborn. Why are you here playing with 11 other people? You are a terrible father. Haiyah.”
– To the singer Inch Chua: “Inch, how are you? Do you regret leaving your music career yet?”
– To contestants midway: “Haiyah, why so slow? Uncle Roger, Grandma, cooks faster than you.”
From what Shen said, it seemed like Uncle Roger would be joining the other episodes, so I cross my fingers and I’ll get some wicked action out of him.
Season 2 of MasterChef Singapore airs every Sunday at 9:30 pm on Channel 5 and meWATCH; Catch Uncle Roger here!
