SINGAPORE: Police are investigating two women in contempt of court for posts on social media alleging preferential treatment in the sentencing of individuals involved in the Orchard Towers murder.

In a press release on Monday (November 2), the police said that they acted under two authorization orders from the Attorney General’s Office (AGC) to initiate investigations against the women, aged 28 and 36.

“Both individuals made social media posts alleging preferential treatment based on race of the defendants involved in an incident at Orchard Towers that took place on July 2, 2019,” police said.

They added that investigations are ongoing.

Last month, the AGC refuted allegations made on social media that the people involved in the Orchard Towers case received preferential treatment at sentencing because of their race.

“The accusations of preferential treatment for different races are without foundation and have the potential to upset racial harmony in Singapore, causing irreversible divisions in our communities,” the AGC said in its statement.

“AGC will not hesitate to take action against those who break the law.”
