SINGAPORE – About two-thirds of Singaporeans want Joe Biden to be elected as the next US president, a new poll showed, and the Democratic presidential candidate is seen as more popular in the city-state than among his Asian peers and the Pacific.
But Biden fared pretty badly among the Taiwanese. His popularity lagged behind President Donald Trump by between 30% and 42%.
The poll, released by British research firm YouGov on Thursday (October 15), showed that 66 percent of those polled in Singapore favor Biden, while only 12 percent prefer Trump. And one in three Singaporeans believe that Trump performed “terribly” as president of the United States.
In contrast, more than half of those surveyed in the city rated Biden as “excellent”, “good” or “average” as a potential president, although only 47% of them are confident that he would win the presidential election scheduled for November. 3.
The YouGov survey was conducted between September 24 and October 5 among a sample of 1,011 Singaporeans and 10,386 respondents in eight Asia-Pacific countries or territories, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Thailand, the Philippines, Australia and Taiwan. .
Overall, Biden is the favorite presidential pick across the board, particularly in Indonesia, Malaysia and Australia. In these three countries, almost two-thirds of those surveyed prefer him to Trump.
Trump, on the other hand, is less popular in all of the surveyed territories, scoring around 10 to 20 percent, except for Taiwan and Hong Kong.
He is less popular in Malaysia: only 9 percent of respondents prefer him to Biden, who scored 62 percent. More than two-thirds of Malaysians, or 68 percent of them, think he performed “terribly” as president.
In most areas surveyed, Trump is more likely to be viewed as a “poor” or “terrible” president (48-68%) than an “excellent”, “good” or “average” president (23- 46%).
But in the Philippines and Taiwan, more than half of those surveyed (60 percent and 59 percent respectively) view Trump as average or better, compared to 30 percent who view him as poor or terrible.
With Biden, the majority of respondents in all surveyed locations rated it as “excellent,” “good,” or “average.”
But in Hong Kong, the number of people who view Biden negatively (20 percent) outnumbers those who view him positively (12 percent).
Biden is leading Trump in the city as his preferred US presidential pick by just a narrow margin: 42% to 36%.
When it comes to Trump’s impact on their lives, where respondents live and the world, the responses are largely negative, the YouGov poll showed. But in Taiwan, there are more people who think that the Trump presidency will be good for the territory.
“In light of his strong stance on international relations in the region, Taiwanese tend to think that the president is more likely to have had a positive (45 percent) than a negative (33 percent) impact on Taiwan. This contrasts Joe Biden, where opinions are divided on whether his impact would be positive (26 percent) or negative (28 percent), “said YouGov.
While both Taiwanese and Filipinos are divided on the impact Trump has had on themselves personally, they join the rest of the region in thinking that his impact on the wider world has been more negative than positive.
Most of the surveyed areas expect a positive impact from Biden, except for Taiwan and Hong Kong.
“Again, Taiwan and Hong Kong are the exceptions, and people in both places are divided on whether the impact on themselves or where they live would be good or bad,” YouGov said.
“The Taiwanese people clearly see President Trump as the candidate most likely to improve relations between the United States and Taiwan (42 percent versus 14 percent for Biden) … Hong Kong residents are also more likely they see it as the best option for the US economy (34 percent versus 19 percent), “YouGov said.
“Everywhere, and on the five issues we asked about (international relations, climate change, coronavirus, economy and peace), people tend to think that Biden would do a better job than Trump.”
A Reuters / Ipsos poll conducted on October 4 in the US shows that Biden has a 10 percentage point advantage over Trump, although his advantage in battle states is less pronounced.
