Two teenage boys, ages 16 and 19, were arrested in a case of harassment by moneylenders causing harm to another person after they allegedly assaulted a man who had borrowed money from a moneylender.
Police were alerted to a case of harassment by a moneylender along New Upper Changi Road on September 16, around 10:55 p.m., where two male suspects allegedly beat a male victim in connection with a loan that took from a usurer.
Through the investigation, officers from the Bedok Police Division and the Criminal Investigation Department established the identities of the two suspects and arrested them on October 1.
Both teens were indicted in court on Saturday (October 3) under the Lenders Act (2010 revised edition).
For first-time offenders, the crime of harassment by lenders carries a fine of between $ 5,000 and $ 50,000, with a mandatory prison term of up to five years.
If harm was caused to another person in the course of committing the crime, the offender will also be punished with five to eight strokes of the cane.
Police said they have zero tolerance for harassing activities by lenders.
“Anyone who acts on behalf of the usurers to cause harm to other people, or to disturb public safety, peace and security in any way, will be treated harshly in accordance with the law,” they added in a statement.
Members of the public are advised to stay away from usurers and not to work or assist usurers in any way.
