A ventilation duct fell from the ceiling of a movie theater in the Nex mall yesterday during a movie, injuring two people.

A spokesperson for Shaw Theaters said the conduit in Hall 6 was cleared at 4.45pm.

Movie theater staff tended to injured customers until paramedics arrived, he said.

The Singapore Civil Defense Force said two injured people were taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Details of his injuries were not immediately available.

No other injuries were reported.

The theater, located on Nex’s fourth level, will be closed until further notice, the Shaw Theaters spokesman said, adding that the company is working with owner Gold Ridge and authorities to investigate the incident.

The Straits Times understands that all movie theaters were evacuated and staff asked customers for their names and contact details in order to refund tickets.

A photo on the Mustsharenews website showed the detached fan landing in several rows of seats on the right side of the movie theater.

In one photo, a client is seen lying on the ground while in another a person is seen tied to a stretcher.

A spokesman for the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) said it sent an engineer to investigate the fallen air conditioning and mechanical ventilation duct at 6.30 p.m.

BCA has instructed the building owner to appoint a professional engineer to conduct a detailed investigation of the incident, inspect and assess the condition of other conduits in the theater, and recommend remedial action.

A viewer, who wanted to be known only as Ms. Vivian, was watching the movie Tenet with her family in another movie theater when the incident occurred.

“The lights came on suddenly for a few minutes, but the movie was still playing, so we thought it was nothing serious. But when the movie suddenly turned off, some people got a little angry and things got a little chaotic.

“Eventually, the staff told us to evacuate,” said the 24-year-old banking analyst.

Correction note: The Building and Construction Authority has clarified that its engineer was on site at 6.30 pm.
