WASHINGTON (REUTERS) – US President Donald Trump was “very well” and fever-free at a military hospital on Saturday (October 3), the day after he tested positive for Covid-19, the doctor said. of the president.

But a person familiar with the situation said that some of Trump’s vital signs over the past 24 hours were very concerning and that the next 48 hours will be critical in terms of his care.

Trump was transferred to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center near Washington on Friday a few hours after his diagnosis, an extraordinary event that disrupted the US presidential race a month before the Nov.3 election.

White House physician Sean P. Conley told reporters outside the hospital Saturday that Trump had not experienced shortness of breath and supplemental oxygen had not been administered.

“The team and I are very pleased with the progress the president has made,” said Dr. Conley, adding that the president was in a great mood.

Trump, 74, has not had a fever for the past 24 hours and is being closely monitored for complications, the doctor said. He was unable to give a timetable for the discharge of the president from the hospital.

One of the doctors at the briefing said Trump told him, “I feel like I could get out of here today.”

The president asked about the drug hydroxychloroquine, but was not taking it at the moment, doctors said. At the beginning of the pandemic, Trump had touted the drug as a potential treatment for Covid-19.

The White House has said that Trump will work in a special suite at the hospital for the next few days as a precaution. He had no public events scheduled for Saturday.

The diagnosis was the latest setback for the Republican president, who trails his Democratic rival Joe Biden in opinion polls before the presidential election.

Trump has downplayed the threat of the coronavirus pandemic from the start, even as the disease has killed more than 200,000 Americans and hit the American economy.

Dr. Conley said Trump had received a first dose of a five-day course of Remdesivir, an intravenous antiviral drug sold by Gilead Sciences Inc that has been shown to shorten hospital stays.

He’s also taking an experimental treatment, Regeneron’s REGN-COV2, one of several experimental Covid-19 drugs known as monoclonal antibodies, in addition to zinc, vitamin D, famotidine, melatonin, and aspirin, Dr. Conley said.

Trump announced on Twitter early Friday that he and the first lady, Mrs. Melania Trump, had contracted the virus.

You are at high risk because of your age and weight. He has remained apparently in good health during his time in office, but he is not known to exercise regularly or eat a healthy diet.

Several other prominent Republicans also tested positive Friday, including former White House Senior Adviser Kellyanne Conway and Republican Senators Mike Lee and Thom Tillis.

On Saturday, a third senator was diagnosed with Covid-19: Republican Ron Johnson, chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie also said he tested positive.

Vice President Mike Pence, who will assume presidential duties if Trump becomes seriously ill, tested negative, a spokesman said. The 61-year-old former Indiana governor works from his own residence about three miles from the White House.
