WASHINGTON: Donald Trump’s presidential campaign on Wednesday (November 11) sued Michigan to prevent the US state from certifying the results of last week’s election, where the president has followed Democrat Joe Biden.
According to a complaint filed in federal court in western Michigan, many people have filed affidavits describing alleged voting misconduct, with the focus on the Democratic stronghold of Wayne County, which includes Detroit.
The allegations are similar to those raised by the Trump campaign and some Republicans in trials in various states. Legal experts have said the litigation is unlikely to result in Trump winning a second term in the White House.
The Trump campaign has alleged that misconduct in Michigan included harassment of Republican contenders and a requirement that they adhere to six-foot distancing rules as opposed to Democratic contenders, and that “illegal ballots were not eligible “.
The complaint stated that election results should not be certified without confirming that all ballots were counted correctly and that a special election might be necessary in problematic precincts.
Jake Rollow, a spokesman for the Michigan State Department, said in a statement that the Trump campaign was promoting false claims to erode public confidence in the Michigan election.
“It doesn’t change the truth: Michigan elections were conducted fairly, safely and transparently, and the results are an accurate reflection of the will of the people,” Rollow said.
Trump has refused to give in to Biden, claiming without proof that widespread fraud cost him a victory.
The president recently trailed Biden in Michigan by more than 148,000 votes, or 2.6 percentage points, based on unofficial vote totals.
