Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle believes the club is facing a ‘decisive season’ after they landed one of the transfer hits of the summer to bring Gareth Bale back to the club.

Bullet He will sign a one-year loan agreement to end his strained relationship with Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane. And Hoddle is convinced that the return of the four-time Champions League winner gives Spurs a chance to end their long wait for silverware.

However, ex Tottenham Hoddle suggested that the club dare not fall short in its campaign for cutlery once again, with club president Daniel Levy rolling the dice by sanctioning an expensive loan deal in a bid to give coach José Mourinho the Chance to win the club’s first trophy since 2008.

“This is a decisive season for Tottenham because they need to start winning trophies. The signing of Bale has to give them the opportunity to do it, “Hoddle said in a BT sport event.

“They need to go back to the top four positions and qualify for the Champions League again. But now the time has come to start winning trophies because that has been lacking for too long.

“They got very close to Mauricio Pochettino on some occasions, but they fell short when it mattered most. Now José has been tasked with changing that label from being an almost men’s club.

“The players want to win something. You want to go back to your stadium when your carrot is done and see pictures on the wall of you lifting a trophy. “

Levy sees the value in Bale’s deal

Many observers are surprised that the normally financially prudent Levy approved the deal to sign Bale. But Hoddle suspects the Spurs president could see value in a transfer that didn’t involve a large upfront fee.

“Daniel Levy likes crafty deals that he considers a good deal for the club. That is why he has decided to bet on this with Bale ”, he added.

“I don’t think it would have come close to that if it had involved a massive transfer fee. She is only paying a percentage of her salary and the excitement she has created for fans shows that it is a good deal.

“Bale is a four-time Champions League champion, a huge name and I see this as a good deal for Tottenham as they have it at a reduced price.

“Paying £ 50-60 million and then higher wages, this would have been a deal Tottenham would not have been considering. But now they need to make the most of this opportunity and bring Bale’s fitness levels to a point where he can be effective.

“He’s had injuries and he has to be out there playing, whether it’s affecting the game off the bench or opening games.”
