SINGAPORE: Moderate stormy rains and windy conditions are expected in the first two weeks of 2021, the Singapore Meteorological Service (MSS) said on Thursday (December 31).

On most days of the fortnight, moderate torrential rains are expected in the afternoon. This can last into the evening on some days.

In a few days, the large-scale convergence of winds in the region could bring heavy and widespread torrential rains over the country.

“In general, rainfall for the first half of January 2021 is expected to be above average over most of the island,” MSS said.

The rising monsoon in early January 2021 is also expected to bring cooler daily temperatures of between 22 degrees Celsius and 31 degrees Celsius within a few days.

For the rest of the fortnight, daily temperatures are forecast to range between 23 degrees Celsius and 33 degrees Celsius. The daily maximum temperature can reach a maximum of 34 degrees Celsius in a day or two, MSS said.

DECEMBER REVIEW

During December, moderate to heavy “short duration” stormy rains fell on Singapore mainly in the afternoon and evening, with some days extending into the night.

On December 26, strong solar warming of land areas, along with localized convergence of winds, caused heavy torrential rains in many parts of the country.

Total daily rainfall recorded on December 26 was 108.4mm in Mandai, the highest total rainfall in one day for December.

The daily temperature in December ranged from 22.2 degrees Celsius to 35.1 degrees Celsius. The highest daily maximum temperature of 35.1 degrees Celsius was recorded in Admiralty on December 25, while the lowest minimum temperature of 22.2 degrees Celsius was recorded in Sembawang on December 28.
