The Red Devils boss is only focusing on keeping his team in pursuit of the league title, but says they have faith
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says it is too early to talk about Manchester United’s chances of winning the Premier League title after their late win against Wolves on Tuesday.
Marcus Rashford’s goal in injury time gave United all three points against the Wolves at Old Trafford and placed the Red Devils in second place on the table, two points behind leaders Liverpool.
The result extended United’s unbeaten streak in the league to nine games, but Solskjaer believes any talk of a Man Utd title challenge should be put aside for now.
However, the Norwegian tactician said the team has “faith” and feels it can outperform any team.
“There is no title race after 15 games,” Solskjaer said. “You can miss a chance to be in a race in the first 10 games. But play another 15, get to 30, and then maybe we can start talking about a title race.”
“But the belief is there. We go into each game thinking that we can win against anyone anywhere. Outside, we have shown what we are capable of, we are improving at home as well and this result is huge in confidence and attitude.”
Bruno Fernandes was once again instrumental in United’s victory, with his ball over the top leading to Rashford’s late goal.
Since his Premier League debut in February, the Portugal international has directly participated in more Premier League goals than any other player (32 – 18 goals, 14 assists).
Solskjaer admitted that it wasn’t Fernandes’ most stellar performance, but was glad that his perseverance paid off.
“He definitely didn’t play his best game,” he said. “He has played better games, but he is always creating opportunities.
“Maybe he did more for them than for us today! But he has the knack of looking for that pass, and in the end it worked.”
On Tuesday, the Premier League confirmed 18 new positive tests for Covid-19 in the week starting December 21, the most positive results in a single round of testing this season.
When asked about the situation, Solskjaer said he does not see the benefit of the Premier League temporarily halting action in an attempt to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
The news came just a day after Manchester City’s game at Everton was postponed four hours in advance due to a coronavirus outbreak at Etihad Stadium, while Fulham’s game against Tottenham on Wednesday is also in doubt. .
Eighteen positive cases surpass the previous high of 16 recorded in the week that began November 9 and reflects the more general situation in England, with more people now hospitalized due to the virus than at the peak of the first wave in April.
West Brom head coach Sam Allardyce has called for a circuit break, a strict set of restrictions designed to reverse the tide of the pandemic, but Solskjaer isn’t sure what benefit it will bring.
“As a club and as a group, we have been very good at following the protocols,” Solskjaer said.
“That’s part of the job. I don’t see the benefit of having a circuit cut because when are we going to play the games?
“We all know that this year is very difficult, but if you stop more games, I don’t think that will be a big change, it could be a longer one. When do we end the season?”
