SINGAPORE – A woman who is now behind bars for killing her two-year-old daughter in April 2018 lost her baby in February of that year after he was found unconscious in bed, a forensic court heard on Thursday (3 May September).
The mother of six, now 31, lost three of her children: the baby, her sister and her older brother, who died of a viral infection in 2011.
She and her family members cannot be named due to a gag order.
The court had previously heard that the three-month-old may have died after his mother accidentally rolled on top of him in his sleep.
There was also the possibility that the baby, who was born prematurely, had died of illness. As a result, the cause of the baby’s death cannot be determined.
In Thursday’s investigation into the baby’s death, State Coroner Kamala Ponnampalam said there was no basis to suspect a crime and recorded an open verdict in the case.
In January 2018, he was admitted to the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital because he had a fever, diarrhea and vomiting. He was later discharged.
In February of that year, the mother placed him on her bed before lying next to him.
When the baby began to cry, she placed him on his stomach with his head turned to the side. She also used a pillow to support her body, the court heard.
The woman fell asleep next to her son shortly after.
He woke up later to find that the baby was lying on his stomach with his face on a pillow. The woman attended to her and saw a mixture of blood and mucus on her face.
She alerted authorities and was instructed to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the boy.
Later paramedics arrived and took the boy to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy found no external injuries on his body.
Two months after this tragedy, the woman killed her older sister.
The housewife was caring for the girl in her two-bedroom flat on April 9, 2018, when she got angry at the girl for defecating on a towel in the bedroom after her bath.
He took the girl to the bathroom to wash herself, and on the way some feces fell on the floor.
The woman scolded her daughter and the girl began to cry.
Shortly after, the woman became even more angry when the girl did not obey her instructions to go to the bedroom.
He led the girl into a room, lifted her up to shoulder height, and threw her to the floor hard. This made the girl cry even louder.
Then the woman told her daughter to leave her toys in the living room.
When he saw the girl standing and crying, he picked her up again and threw her to the ground.
The housewife, who was diagnosed with a major depressive disorder at the time of the attack, was sentenced to seven years in jail in November last year after pleading guilty to one count of wrongful death that does not amount to murder.
