The victim helped pay for ‘repair costs’ in exchange for company.

Four people, between the ages of 15 and 21, are being investigated by police for their alleged involvement in a cheating case involving about $ 12,200.

Police said they received a report on November 15, around midnight, from a victim who had befriended two strangers on a dating website.

“The duo allegedly ordered the victim to wire them cash on several occasions to pay for repair costs allegedly incurred in a traffic accident and they would offer company in return,” police added.

Through follow-up investigations, agents from the Bedok Police Division established the identity of the four people on November 16.

Police investigations are ongoing.

The crime of cheating carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine.

Police said they take a serious view of people who may be involved in scams and fraud, adding: “Perpetrators will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

“Internet love scams remain a serious crime problem.

“To avoid falling victim to these scams, members of the public should be careful when making friends with strangers online. They should also be careful when asked to receive or transfer money to people they don’t know.”
