WASHINGTON (AFP, BLOOMBERG) – The United States recorded its highest number of coronavirus cases recorded in a day on Saturday (January 2), with more than 277,000 infections.

The country most affected by the pandemic in the world, the United States, has marked 20.4 million cases overall and just under 350,000 deaths.

Infections have risen in recent months, with top U.S. government scientist Anthony Fauci warning just days after Christmas that the worst of the pandemic could be yet to come, bringing the country to a head as that vacation travel spreads the virus.

The country has failed in its efforts to quell Covid-19, with its vaccination program beset by logistical problems and overloaded hospitals.

More than 4.2 million people in the U.S. have already taken their first hits, with 13 million doses distributed, but that’s far behind the 20 million vaccines that President Donald Trump’s administration promised for the end. 2020.

Meanwhile, New York state has surpassed one million Covid-19 cases, after a bleak year in which more than 30,000 of its residents died from the virus.

More than a third of the state’s total cases were reported in December when cold weather pushed people indoors, the holidays increased social gatherings and residents grew weary of restrictions.

On the first day of 2021, the US surpassed 20 million Covid-19 cases, double that of the second-largest nation, India.

Governor Andrew Cuomo reported 15,074 new infections, down from New York’s pandemic record of 16,802 cases reached two days ago. Another 128 people in the state died of Covid-19-related causes, Cuomo said Saturday. The statewide positive test rate dropped slightly to 7.45 percent.

In other parts of the country, several states are struggling with a daily increase in cases, deaths and hospitalizations amid the lack of a national strategy to control the increase.

California had more than 2.2 million cases and 21,000 hospitalized for Covid-19 as of January 1. Texas and Florida have also passed one million, and Illinois is on track to reach that milestone in the next week.
