SINGAPORE: The Special Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) that was to take place in Singapore in May has been rescheduled for August.

The meeting will be held August 17-20 instead of May 25-28 as originally scheduled.

“Although the World Economic Forum and the Government of Singapore continue to rely on measures in place to ensure a safe and effective meeting, and local transmission of COVID-19 in Singapore remains negligible, the change in the meeting schedule reflects international challenges in containing the pandemic, “the WEF said in a press release on Wednesday (February 3).

“The current global travel restrictions have made it difficult to plan an in-person meeting in the first half of the year.

“In addition, different air transport and quarantine regulations have increased the waiting time required to ensure that global participants can make arrangements to join.”

The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) said after the announcement that the Singaporean government “understands the challenges” facing the WEF and has agreed to rescheduling.

“We will continue to work closely with the World Economic Forum to organize a safe and successful Special Annual Meeting in Singapore,” the MTI said in response to media inquiries.

The Special Annual Meeting in Singapore in August will be the first global leadership summit to address the challenges of recovering from the pandemic, the WEF said. The meeting is usually held in Davos, Switzerland.

“A global leadership summit needs the participation of all global stakeholders,” said Klaus Schwab, founder and CEO of the WEF.

“The Special Annual Meeting in Singapore in August will provide the venue for leaders from business, government and civil society to come together to address steps for global recovery.”
