Of course, no one in their right mind would want to play Super Mario Bros on a handheld game console that actively wounds the user with sharp thorns.
But what people wanted was a Game Boy made out of durian, for science and content, of course.
Cedrick Tan, the Singaporean YouTuber who built a portable console out of an empty watermelon, came back with a new fruit-based project that some people would love but others would hate. Like a durian itself.
By popular demand, the 24-year-old Singapore Management University (SMU) student took a durian (a Mao Shan Wang, to be exact), emptied it, and turned it into a pointy chassis for a Game Boy Advance emulator.

Taking approximately two weeks from start to finish, the project proved to be a much more difficult process than it took to create Melon Boy. Speaking with AsiaOne, Tan noted that he had to downsize the circuit components inside the durian, as it was much smaller than a watermelon.
“This meant reducing the size of everything which led to multiple technical problems. Solving these glitches took most of the time and I even had to redo the circuit from scratch in a moment, ”he laughed.
In a YouTube video uploaded on Saturday (September 26), Tan showed the challenges of building the prickly contraption from scratch, including how he faced problems while soldering on the Raspberry Pi circuit board and gagged from solder fumes.
But in the end, the reactions it got from others made it all worth it. Carrying the durian Game Boy, appropriately nicknamed the PokeBoy, in a plastic bag, he went to seek opinions from his classmates at SMU and random youth at Funan Mall. The game of choice this time? Super Mario Bros 3.
However, some of the more interesting interactions with passersby were not left in the final video, as Tan was asked to remove some images taken at certain facilities.
“This included a gentleman from the UK who was intrigued by the concept and told me that he couldn’t appreciate its taste no matter how hard he tried,” Tan recounted.
“However, he tried a KitKat durian bar that he proudly showed me a photo of. There were other foreigners who came to chat too! “
Tan told AsiaOne that more people had started to recognize him too since the last maneuver he made with his watermelon Game Boy.
According to him, a group of high school students in the video had never before played on a standard Game Boy (the last Nintendo model in the Game Boy family was released in 2005) had really enjoyed their first gaming experience on their machine.
Like the last effort with the watermelon, Tan learned that working with organic material to build game consoles has some pretty nasty downsides.
“Watermelons and durians rot ridiculously fast if I don’t leave them outdoors. Left in a bag overnight, they rot instantly, developing fluffy white fruit mold or having a grotesque interior, ”he said.
Nonetheless, the YouTuber plans to continue his fruity Game Boy series.
“The next fruit-based Game Boy will probably be a jackfruit! Imagine carrying such a huge console! It will be a good laugh! ”
