SINGAPORE – 24 new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed as of noon on Sunday (February 7), including one community case.

The only case from the community is a 43-year-old Singaporean man who works at Changi Airport Terminals 1 and 3, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said in an update Sunday night.

Their job involves issuing electronic monitoring devices to people who will be complying with their stay-at-home notice outside of dedicated facilities and helping them use the devices, the ministry said.

While on duty, he wears a surgical mask, face shield and gloves, the Health Ministry added.

The man showed no symptoms and was detected when he was tested on February 4 as part of the routine tests included in the list.

His test result was positive for Covid-19 infection the next day and he was taken by ambulance to the National Center for Infectious Diseases.

His previous tests from the routine test, the last one on January 22, came back negative, as did his serological test, indicating that it is likely a current infection.

Epidemiological investigations are ongoing, the Health Ministry said, adding that the man’s close contacts, including family members and co-workers, have been isolated and quarantined. They will be tested at the beginning and end of their quarantine period, the ministry said.

The other 23 cases were imported and placed on a stay-at-home notice upon arrival in Singapore.

There were no new cases in the workers’ bedrooms.

The latest cases bring Singapore’s total to 59,699 since the first Covid-19 case was detected in Singapore on January 23 last year.

On Saturday, the first case of probable Covid-19 reinfection was detected in Singapore: a 28-year-old Bangladeshi man with a work permit staying in a dormitory at 43 Tech Park Crescent.

He had been confirmed to have the Covid-19 infection on April 12 last year and subsequently recovered, consistently testing negative for the infection as of June.

But on January 25, his test result came back positive for Covid-19 infection.

While reinfection is rare, the Health Ministry said clinical and laboratory evidence suggests the man has been reinfected. So far, the other workers recovered in the dormitories have not suffered a significant loss of immunity after infection, the ministry said.

As of Saturday, the number of new cases in the community has dropped from three cases two weeks ago to one case in the last week.

The number of unrelated cases in the community also fell from two cases to one in the same period.

Singapore has had 29 deaths from Covid-19 complications, while 15 who tested positive have died from other causes.

Globally, the virus outbreak, which began in December 2019, has infected more than 105 million people. More than 2.3 million people have died.
