The mother and stepfather of an 11-year-old girl were charged yesterday with her murder.

The couple, both 26, are on remand at the Central Police Division on Cantonment Road and appeared in court via video link.

Each of them faces one count of murder with common intent and are charged with causing the girl’s death between November 6 and 10 in a Housing Board apartment.

All parties, as well as the location of the alleged crime, cannot be named due to a gag order issued by the court.

ASKED TO SEE HIS CHILDREN

Yesterday, the woman, who is the biological mother of the girl, asked to see her three children.

She said she had joint custody of two of them with her ex-husband and that one of them will be entering elementary school soon.

She asked if she could be released on bail to deliver documents to her ex-husband and pay for school fees and childcare arrangements for her son.

The man also asked to see his son through a video call.

Records show that the couple married in April of this year. The woman’s first marriage was in 2013.

District Judge Tan Jen Tse said bail would not be granted due to the nature of the crime and told the couple to make their requests to the investigating officer. He ordered that they remain in preventive detention for a week with permission to remove them for investigations.

In an earlier statement, police said they were alerted to the girl’s unnatural death around 1.20pm on Tuesday.

They had taken her to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital that same day at 11 a.m. M. And she was pronounced dead at 12:40 p.m. M.

The case will be heard again next Thursday. If convicted of murder, the couple faces the death penalty.
