Finding an empty seat in the malls of Singapore is like finding an oasis in the desert. But a buyer was in for a big surprise when the seat he had found collapsed the moment he sat in it.
He was left with a 4-inch-long wound to his leg after a wooden seat collapsed at Waterway Point on Thursday night (Sept. 3), the mall confirmed.
By sharing photos of his injuries and the seat in question on Facebook on the same day, the victim, Victor Tan, urged those visiting the mall to take note of the potential danger.
“This platform to sit on (without the social distancing label ‘Don’t Sit’) collapsed the moment I sat on it with my daughter. I am 70 kg more and she 11 kg,” he wrote.
“This could have resulted in more serious or even fatal injuries, especially for the elderly,” Tan said, adding in a comment that he often sees elderly shoppers lounging in similar seats at the mall.

Tan, who was at the mall with his wife and 16-month-old daughter, also suffered abrasions on his back and several tears on his shorts, he told Shin Min Daily News.
The accident happened out of nowhere, just as he sat down to clean his daughter’s hands while waiting for his wife, he said.
Fortunately, her daughter was sitting on her leg and she was able to support her to keep her from falling.
“I immediately checked if my daughter or I suffered any injuries. There were also some kind members of the public who came to help us,” he told the Chinese newspaper.
While her daughter did not cry or complain after the fall, she suffered some abrasions, she said, adding that she would closely monitor her condition.
Expressing concern about the wooden seat, which appeared to be hollow, Tan asked the mall to take responsibility for the accident and provide an explanation.
In response to media inquiries, Waterway Point said that security personnel and service personnel had attended to the buyer and accompanied him for further medical assistance.
“For the safety and well-being of all shoppers, the wooden seats in Waterway Point’s Village Square have been cordoned off, and we will implement further measures as needed,” the mall added.
