KUALA LUMPUR: A federal legislator from the state of Sabah denied on Tuesday (November 24) that he had not finished serving his COVID-19 quarantine, and claimed that the Health Ministry authorized him to attend the current meeting of parliament.

This came after the opposition asked in parliament whether Jeffrey Kitingan had undergone a 14-day quarantine for all travelers from Sabah arriving on the peninsula, as required by the Ministry of Health.

“I went to the infirmary and they gave me the quarantine release order. They cut off my quarantine wristband, ”Mr. Kitingan said according to the Star newspaper.

“It is not true that I did not observe the quarantine. They (the opposition) just kacau (annoy me) “

Sabah’s chief deputy minister was under mandatory COVID-19 quarantine from November 12 to 25, but the order to release him on Monday was issued after health officials declared his health to be satisfactory.

Spokesperson Azhar Azizan Harun was also quoted by Malaysia Insight after the Sabah Member of Parliament (MP) briefly appeared in parliament on Tuesday: “He was quarantined since November 12 and tested negative for COVID-19” .

Sepanggar MP Azis Jamman pressed the issue and asked how Mr Kitingan had managed to obtain an early release from quarantine.

“Many of us MPs from Sabah have not gone home to see our families for almost two months because we respect what the speaker told us.

“I missed my aunt’s funeral because of this, so does this mean there is a double standard? You are risking the health of all of us in this discussion room, “he said.

The speaker replied: “I am just following the release order from the Ministry of Health.”

“I cannot question this … But I have asked you to stay away for now,” the speaker added, according to Malaysia Insight.

Separately, Health Minister Adham Baba said in a statement on Tuesday that starting Wednesday, travelers from Sabah will no longer have to go through a 14-day quarantine when arriving in other states if they test negative. of COVID-19 three days before their trip or do not have any symptoms.

The decision was made after the risk assessment of COVID-19 cases in Malaysia showed a downward trend for Sabah, compared to trends in other states in Peninsular Malaysia, especially in the Klang Valley.
