A customer has refuted the claims of a prohibited stall owner who said that the cockroach he found on his noodles could have been a dried squid.
Stomper Tan She previously shared how she had found a roach in her Foodpanda order from Taste Beyond Taste Ban Mian & Fish Soup at Block 156 Yishun Street 11 on December 5.
He reported the matter to the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) the same day.
In a Stomp report on December 11, Tan said he felt unwell, uncomfortable and traumatized after the incident, leading him to stay in his room without eating for the rest of the day.
The SFA told Stomp that it did not detect any violations of our food safety and hygiene requirements during the inspection of the position.
Shin Min Daily News reporters subsequently visited the booth, but found it empty.
A nearby vendor said that the owner of the Ban mian stall, a young woman, had stopped operating since December 8.
The vendor, who did not want to be named, also said that the ban mian stall has always been clean and tidy, as the stall owner cleaned it every day.
When Shin Min contacted by phone, the owner of the Ban mian stall explained that the base of his soup is boiled with dried squid and that the customer might have mistaken it for a cockroach.
She added: “If the client can adequately clarify that it is actually a cockroach, I am willing to apologize to him.”
The stall owner also admitted that she was disheartened by criticism of the incident, leading her to terminate her contract with the cafeteria owner prematurely.
“I take it as a break before I find other job opportunities to make ends meet,” he said.
Responding to the stall owner’s claims, Tan told Stomp: “I had confirmed it was a cockroach before reporting to the SFA.
“Yes, I saw news reports everywhere with the headline that the stall owner got discouraged in his business because I ‘misunderstood’ the dried squid.
“This is not only misleading, netizens are leaving comments to mock and scold me for not letting the matter rest.”
Tan also noted how he had stated in his original report that his intention was to raise awareness of food hygiene and not blame the position.
He said: “I am tired of this news. Even the publications in Malaysia are reporting it.”
“The focus has shifted to why the customer is being so mean to a cockroach. But the worst thing is how the stall owner now claims that he is not a cockroach.”
Tan added that he has nothing more to say about it and asked to be left alone, adding: “Cyber bullies are everywhere now.”
