Built in the Kallang-Whampoa district, and towering over lower-rise developments on the mature estate, each block of St George’s Towers features a 24th floor sky deck equipped with exercise equipment and benches where residents can enjoy of unobstructed views of the city and the Whampoa River.

Yesterday, HDB presented 35 awards for excellence in design, construction and engineering, the highest number given since the HDB awards began in 2008.

The winners were selected from a list of 72 projects from the three categories.

The distinctive features of St George’s Towers earned Look Architects the HDB design award in the housing category. Unlike most HDB blocks, the windows in all three blocks are arranged in a staggered format every six floors.

Launched in 2014, the 738 homes in St George’s Towers comprise studio apartments, as well as three- and four-bedroom apartments. Half of the 151 studio apartments were reserved for seniors who wanted to move to a smaller flat in the same city or within 2 km of their previous flat, or live near or with their parents and married child.

Alkaff Vista in Bidadari, designed by ADDP Architects, was the other project to win the HDB design award in the same housing category.

The renovated Hougang Town Center, filled with images of fishing villages and a playground inspired by its past as a freshwater swamp, was praised for its good design.

SQFT Architects led the project under HDB’s Remaking Our Heartland program.

The 10 housing projects that won the HDB construction awards obtained quality benchmark scores from the Building and Construction Authority’s Construction Quality Assessment System (Conquas) above 90.

Two BTO projects, Tampines GreenView and Meadow Spring @ Yishun, by Ho Lee Construction and BHCC Construction, respectively, received the Conquas Star rating, the highest possible award for construction and workmanship.

HDB CEO Cheong Koon Hean said the large number of awards this year affirms the high standards reached by industry partners to help HDB create a quality living environment.

“Our architectural and engineering consultants have shown excellent consideration of the site context and produced thoughtful, attractive and creative designs, while our construction contractors have innovatively overcome constraints and shown high productivity and efficiency in the construction, “said Dr. Cheong.
