The attempt to fix the MRT power cable caused a chain reaction

SINGAPORE – Preliminary results show that an attempt to repair a power cable between the Tuas Link and Tuas West Road MRT stations had triggered a series of problems that led to the massive disruption of train service on Wednesday night (14 May October).

In a statement Thursday, public transport operator SMRT said there was a failure in the insulation of a power cable between the two stations. “A circuit breaker at the Tuas West Road station should have tripped to isolate the fault, but did not, causing the NSEWL power system (north-south and east-west lines) to trip,” SMRT said. “To restore power to the NSEWL, there was an attempt to get power from the Buona Vista intake substation (BVI). However, this was done without first isolating the fault, which resulted in a power outage to CCL (Circle Line) as BVI also serves CCL. ”

The operator said the insulation fault was identified and isolated and the faulty circuit breaker component replaced.

“We are working with the LTA (Land Transportation Authority) to conduct a full investigation into the premature failure of these components, together with the original equipment manufacturers who supplied the parts,” said SMRT, while apologizing for the disruption during the night traffic at rush hour. .
