SINGAPORE – A High School 4 student tried to converse with a 40-year-old woman under the pretext of asking for directions and then followed her when she ignored him.
When the woman confronted him, the teenager extended his arm and abused her.
On Wednesday (November 4), the 16-year-old Singaporean pleaded guilty in court to one count of sexual abuse.
He also admitted to insulting the modesty of two teenagers in separate incidents.
The offender cannot be identified due to recent amendments to the Children and Youth Law, which covers minors under 18 years of age.
The identities of the three victims also cannot be revealed due to a gag order.
The offender targeted his first victim, the 40-year-old woman, between 15:15 and 15:40 on February 4.
She was walking to a coffee shop in Block 153A, Serangoon North Avenue 1 when he approached her and asked how to get to the Nex mall in Serangoon Central.
She pointed the way, but instead of walking away, the teenager followed her and tried to “make a little talk.”
He continued to follow the woman even though she ignored him, listened to the court.
The woman then stopped walking and faced him, asking if he continued to follow her.
Then he reached out his arm and abused her. Made a police report that afternoon.
The offender struck again on March 31, when he approached an 18-year-old girl near the Serangoon North Community Center and touched her left shoulder.
He tried to chat with the girl and followed her to a nearby cafe, where he sat across from her, staring at her body and making lewd comments.
He targeted his third victim, a 16-year-old student, on July 8 as she was walking home from school.
He approached the girl and asked what words like “pornography” meant. He also told her that “all women were sexual objects.”
The victim later told a schoolmate about the encounter. The schoolmate, in turn, told a teacher that he made a police report around 5.30pm that day.
On Wednesday, the court requested a report to assess the offender’s suitability for parole. He will be sentenced on December 16.
For sexual abuse, an offender can be imprisoned for up to two years and fined or punished.
For each count of insulting a woman’s modesty, an offender can be jailed for up to one year and fined.
