SINGAPORE: A teenager was arrested after being suspected of being a member of an illegal society, police said on Tuesday (December 29).
Authorities said they were alerted on December 16 to a photo posted on social media that showed a teenager holding a knife in one hand while displaying a gang sign with the other on December 16.
Officers from the Department of Criminal Investigation identified the 17-year-old and arrested him Tuesday.
Police investigations are ongoing.
Anyone found guilty of being a member of an illegal corporation under the Corporation Law faces a fine of up to S $ 5,000, a jail term of up to three years, or both.
Under the same Law, anyone who exhibits, sells or exhibits for sale, or transmits by postal mail or who, without legal authority or excuse, has in his possession any poster, newspaper, book, circular, pictorial representation or any other document or writing anything that is issued or appears to be issued by or on behalf of or in the interests of an illegal society faces a fine of up to S $ 5,000, a jail term of up to two years, or both.
“Police have zero tolerance for secret society activities and will not hesitate to take action against those who choose to associate with gangs or blatantly flaunt their gang affiliation, through social media or otherwise,” authorities said.
They also advised members of the public to stay away from secret society activities and to report those who participated in such activities to the police.
