SINGAPORE – A month after their romantic relationship, a young man sexually abused his 15-year-old girlfriend at home while her mother was in another room, leaving the girl so shocked that she had nightmares and resorted to self-harm.

A district court heard that the girl was referred to a trauma psychologist for psychotherapy.

Deputy Prosecutor Tan Pei Wei said: “On April 18 (last year), the victim reported experiencing ongoing symptoms of PTSD in the form of nightmares from this incident and occasional self-harm in the form of superficial cuts.”

The Singaporean offender, who is now 19 years old, pleaded guilty on Tuesday (November 24) to one count of sexual abuse. He cannot be named due to a gag order to protect the girl’s identity.

The couple began a romantic relationship in June 2018.

The boy went to his girlfriend’s house the following month and they watched television together on a couch. At the time, the girl’s mother was in her own bedroom, the court heard.

Then the girl decided to lie down, since she was sleepy. Thinking that she had fallen asleep, the boy slipped his hand inside her shorts and abused her.

The DPP said: “Throughout the incident, the victim pretended to sleep, because she was afraid that if he knew she was awake, he would do worse.

“Finally, the victim pretended to wake up and sent a text message to her mother to inform her of what happened. The mother asked the victim to come into the bedroom. In the bedroom, the victim told her mother what she had done. the accused”.

Later, the mother confronted the aggressor and he admitted his crime.

The couple broke up shortly after.

On Tuesday, the court requested a report to assess the offender’s suitability for parole.

He will be sentenced on December 15.

For sexual abuse, an offender can be imprisoned for up to two years and fined or punished.
