SINGAPORE: A 46-year-old man admitted in court on Monday (November 9) to committing indecent acts against his high school student nearly a decade ago when he was his history teacher.

The victim was 15 years old at the time of the crimes in 2011. She disclosed the crimes to someone else in 2018, and the school was alerted, and the principal filed a police report on her behalf.

Not all parties, along with the school, can be named to protect the identity of the victim, who is now 24 years old.

The court heard that the defendant met the victim for the first time in 2010, when he taught him class history.

Later in the year, they started talking to each other about their personal lives and met for coffee both at school and outside of school.

They entered a relationship in February 2011, holding hands when they were alone at school, the court heard.

Between March and May of that year, the man was alone with the victim in a room on the school premises when he pressed her against a wall and said: “Now I can do anything.”

The victim was confused and embarrassed but did not react. In that same period, the man also committed another indecent act with the victim on campus.

They kept in touch and met over the June 2011 break, but after classes reopened, he told the teen that their relationship was over.

He made no further advances against her, according to court documents, and they stayed in contact even after she left school.

In January 2014, the victim returned to the school as the defendant had arranged for him to teach relief classes there.

During her stay she showed signs of an eating disorder and was accompanied by the defendant and another person to a hospital. She stopped contacting him in November 2016.

The teacher left school in December 2016 and started working elsewhere, in a place not mentioned in court documents.

In August 2018, the victim told a person not mentioned in court documents about her previous relationship with the defendant.

The matter was reported to the school and referred to the principal, who filed a police report.

The man was scheduled for trial Monday, but instead pleaded guilty to two counts of committing an indecent act against a young man, and two other similar charges were taken into consideration.

He will be sentenced at a later date. For each count, you could face up to two years in jail, a fine of up to S $ 5,000, or both.
