In addition to gumiho, the drama also featured folk tale characters and creatures like the snail bride, jangseung (Korean totem), mountain spirits, fortune tellers, imugi (mythical snake), eoduksini (a kind of ghost) and more.
Kang Shin Hyo said, “When we came up with the synopsis, we had planned to show an even more diverse cast of characters. But when it came time to shoot, there weren’t a lot of familiar or unique characters we could add, so I have a feeling for that. If it is possible to develop a unique and unfamiliar traditional character, then I think we will see a Korean fantasy project with an even more diverse cast. “
The director also praised Lee Dong Wook and Jo Bo Ah, his lead actors. On casting Lee Dong Wook, he said, “The first step that would decide the success or failure of the drama was whether I could choose someone that viewers would believe at first glance was a gumiho. If you were looking for an ancient mountain spirit, a gumiho living in modern times, Lee Dong Wook was the only answer. He did an amazing job portraying Lee Yeon as a character laden with a tragic past, who knows how to sacrifice himself in the end. “
About Jo Bo Ah’s casting, she said, “Nam Ji Ah is a very difficult character to play. She is a production director obsessed with finding out what happened to her parents, she is the female lead in a romance, she is also possessed by a imugi, she’s a princess in a previous life… Jo Bo Ah essentially had to play four different characters on her own, but she worked hard and did well.
