SINGAPORE: Pokémon Go players in Singapore now have up to 300 new locations where they can meet and capture Pokémon or participate in virtual raids, in an attempt to foster support for local tourism.

This follows a partnership between the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and Niantic, the US developer of Pokemon Go, as part of the SingapoRediscovers campaign, STB announced in a press release on Thursday (Nov 12).

“While chasing their favorite Pokémon in Singapore, we hope that players will explore our enclosures, discover hidden gems and support local businesses, while staying safe and observing necessary precautions,” said STB Brand Director Lim Shoo Ling.

The new Pokemon Go locations, or PokeStops and Gyms, can be found in hotels, attractions, retailers, food and beverage establishments and tourist ticket booths in Singapore.

They are located in 10 districts: Changi and East Coast, Chinatown, Civic District, Joo Chiat and Katong, Kampong Glam, Little India, Mandai and Kranji, Marina Bay, Orchard Road and Sentosa.

When players arrive at Pokemon Go locations, they’ll see an in-app banner for the SingapoRediscovers campaign, STB said.

By tapping the banner, players are taken to the campaign website, which displays SingapoRediscovers promotions available at tourism and lifestyle establishments.

STB also plans to schedule special raid battles in some areas. More information will be available on the STB Facebook and Instagram accounts, he said.

“Our strength is influencing people to physically walk from one place to another, and we hope to use this to encourage people to explore different parts of Singapore in depth and drive domestic travel needs,” said Gary Chang, Leader of Niantic’s APAC business development.

The SingapoRediscovers campaign was launched in July to encourage Singaporeans to support local tourism and local businesses.

The initiative came as tourist arrivals and tourism spending in Singapore plummeted following travel restrictions to slow the spread of COVID-19.

As part of the campaign, STB also announced in September that Singaporeans aged 18 and over would receive local tourism vouchers worth S $ 100.
