LONDON: Tottenham Hotspur returned to the top of the Premier League when they drew 0-0 at Chelsea on Sunday, but there were more problems for north London rivals Arsenal, who suffered a fifth loss in their first 10 matches.
Edinson Cavani came off the bench to score twice for Manchester United, who reversed a 2-0 halftime deficit at Southampton to win 3-2, an eighth straight league win, a club record, that the led to the upper half.
When the Spurs briefly led the table before the international break, it was pointed out that their next series of games would give a better indication of whether they are title contenders.
After last week’s 2-0 home win against Manchester City, his disciplined display at Chelsea to win a point may have persuaded a few more that they have a chance.
“If we are contenders, they have to be contenders,” Chelsea manager Frank Lampard said after his team missed a chance to rise to the top with a victory.
Timo Werner had a goal disallowed for Chelsea in the first half and Tammy Abraham should have done better with a header after the break, but Tottenham, especially in the first half, always seemed capable of snatching a goal.
They are now unbeaten in nine league games since a home loss to Everton on opening day and have had three clean sheets in a row. However, manager José Mourinho continues to minimize his team’s chances of finishing above champions such as Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea.
“We are not even in the (title) race, so we are not a horse. We are a pony,” said the Portuguese.
Spurs have 21 points from 10 games, ahead of Liverpool on goal difference. Leicester City can also reach 21 on Monday if they beat Fulham at home. Chelsea, third, is 19.
JIMENEZ INJURY
Arsenal’s 2-1 loss at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers left them 14th with 13 points.
Although the result was overshadowed by a disgusting head clash between Raúl Jiménez de los Wolves and Brazilian Arsenal defender David Luiz that left the Mexican forward in hospital.
During a 10-minute hiatus, Jiménez needed oxygen and was taken away on a stretcher before being rushed to the hospital.
Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo said he was very concerned but offered good news, saying 29-year-old Jiménez was conscious and speaking.
For Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, it’s a case of going back to the drawing board. His failed team has three points less after 10 games this season than he did last season with fellow Spaniard Unai Emery, who was fired exactly one year ago.
It’s their worst scoring streak after 10 games in a Premier League season and they have only scored 10 times.
“It is my responsibility for the team to score more goals. There are no excuses, we have to improve,” Arteta said.
United appeared to be heading for defeat when James Ward-Prowse hit an impressive free kick, having prepared Jan Bednarek to open the scoring in the first half at St Mary’s.
But Uruguay’s Cavani, 33, came in early in the second half and turned the game around with a virtuous display.
He first groomed Bruno Fernandes to give United hope and then scored with two headed goals, the second in injury time.
“Sometimes when we score goals, it’s hard to be the perfect goal,” United’s Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said as his team moved up to eighth, five points behind first place with one game down.
“Edinson has been around the block, he has scored so many goals, he has played soccer for so long, he has been between the two posts, he has seen this game before, he has seen that cross before, he knows exactly when to move.”
