SINGAPORE – A 55-year-old cargo officer linked to a new group in the maritime sector was between the two community cases announced on Tuesday (January 5).

There were also 26 imported cases confirmed by the Ministry of Health (MOH), bringing Singapore’s total to 58,749.

Case 58,997 is a Singaporean man who was aboard the bunker tanker NewOcean 6 from December 21 to 23, as well as from December 28 to January 2.

He stayed at his home on Tah Ching Road between December 23 and 28.

The Health Ministry added that the cargo officer, as well as five recently confirmed cases, are linked to three previous cases, forming a new group NewOcean 6.

His previous tests of the listed routine tests, the latest on December 23, had come back negative for Covid-19.

On December 31, he was quarantined after being identified as a close contact in Case 58,812, a 47-year-old crew member on the same ship.

The cargo officer was transferred to a government quarantine facility on January 2 and tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday.

He was then taken to the National Center for Infectious Diseases.

His serological test result was negative, indicating that it is probably a current infection.

All remaining members of the ship’s crew have been quarantined since December 31.

The other community case is a 49-year-old Indian citizen who is here to visit his spouse from Singapore.

The holder of the short-term visitation pass arrived from India on December 10 and delivered his Stay-at-Home Notice (SHN) at a dedicated facility until December 24.

He is asymptomatic and was caught when he took a pre-departure Covid-19 test on Sunday before his return to India.

His result came back positive for Covid-19 on Monday and he was taken to Mount Elizabeth Hospital.

The 26 imported cases comprise two Singaporeans, two permanent residents, two work pass holders and 20 work permit holders.

They came from countries such as the United Kingdom, Indonesia and the Philippines, and 13 of the work permit holders were foreign domestic workers.

They have been placed in SHN or isolated upon arrival in Singapore, the Health Ministry said.

Overall, the number of new cases in the community has increased from one case in the previous week to 11 cases in the past week. The number of unrelated cases in the community has also increased from one case in the week to four cases in the last week.

With 20 cases discharged on Tuesday, 58,502 patients have made a full recovery from the disease.

A total of 60 patients remain in the hospital, including one in the intensive care unit, while 143 recover in community facilities.

Singapore has had 29 deaths from Covid-19 complications, while 15 who tested positive have died from other causes.
