Mediacorp radio DJ Sonia Chew has been pulled from hosting her annual countdown show following investigations against her for allegedly violating safe distancing measures.

In a statement to The New Paper yesterday, a Mediacorp spokesperson confirmed that Jean Danker will host Let’s Celebrate 2021.

Initially, Ms. Chew was scheduled to host the event with fellow 987FM DJ Joakim Gomez.

The duo was supposed to usher in the new year on the show, which will be screened online and on Mediacorp channels.

However, Ms Chew was recently the subject of investigations by the Ministry of National Development (MND), after complaints were filed about a photo of a large group celebrating the 32nd birthday of Mediacorp artist Jeffrey Xu.

The photo was posted to Xu’s account on October 3 and shows a group of 13 people in a private residence.

Chew was in the photo with other celebrities, including Shane Pow and Terence Cao.

Investigations are ongoing.

A Mediacorp spokesperson told TNP that it takes the matter seriously and constantly reminds its artists to adhere to safe management guidelines. He added that Gomez will continue to host the event along with Ms. Danker.

“The filming of Celebremos 2021 was carried out in accordance with the guidelines of IMDA (Infocomm Media Development Authority), which allows no more than 20 on-screen talent unmasked during production,” he said.

“We would like to assure you that safety remains a priority and that there are safe management measures in place for Let’s Celebrate 2021.”

Chew posted an apology on Instagram over the weekend, saying she was asked for a drink and she didn’t know it was a birthday celebration.

He called it a “grave error of judgment” on his part, adding that it has been a difficult time for his family to witness how distraught they have been.

The radio host, who turns 29 today, also appears in campaigns linked to the Singapore Tourism Board (STB).

This includes Klook’s SingapoRediscovers campaign, which features it promoting heritage tours and tourist spots.

When contacted, Klook declined to comment.

Ms. Chew also recently participated in a Sentosa campaign, and appeared in commercials on Mediacorp’s free platforms.

TNP understands that the commercials featuring it have ended and Sentosa is investigating the matter with Mediacorp.
