Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has asked his players to “step up” and help Bruno Fernandes in the opportunity creation department.
Fernandes led his team to a top four result last season and could do it again this time.
But while he has scored 15 Premier League goals and assisted 11 others this term, his influence has waned as of late.
Three consecutive 0-0 draws, including against Chelsea, have led to concern that the portuguese lacks impact in big games.
For his part, former Sporting boss Carlos Carvalhal urged United on Friday don’t trust the playmaker so much. Solskjaer has now echoed that sentiment, asking his other stars to play a bigger role.
“I think taking responsibility is important to everyone when they play soccer,” he told reporters (via Daily mirror).
“Don’t wait for things to happen, you have to make things happen. And we hope that everyone is a leader, that everyone assumes that responsibility.
“Of course it could be Bruno I, but I know that teams are trying to mark him at times and that’s not a bother for anyone.
“It’s that sometimes in football they try to stop your best player. And someone else will have to step up.
“Bruno could find a position, make room for others, create. He has created chances for others even when he has not touched the ball. And you see that others have created opportunities for Bruno when they haven’t touched the ball ”.
Solskjaer plays an almost ‘perfect’ away game
Despite their lack of goals in recent matches, Solskjaer insisted that his players have had a chance of achieving great results.
