Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said playing as a right back could help Brandon Williams progress at Old Trafford.
The 20 year old, who is a left back by trade, has fought for minutes this season. In fact, he sits behind Luke Shaw and, since October, Alex Telles in the pecking order.
As such, he only made his third campaign start in Saturday FA Cup win over Norwich. But that came as a right back and the Englishman made a good run on his return to full back.
He has the ability to play both sides and speaking to reporters after the game, Solskjaer admitted that he might consider using Williams on the right flank more often.
“I thought he had a really good game,” said the coach (via Manchester evening news).
“Of course, he hasn’t played for a long time, he plays on the right side. We want him to go and be an attacking back and it could be easier for him on the right side.
“But I’m very satisfied with Brandon, one of the positives.”
Recent reports have claimed that Williams is a January transfer goal for Newcastle, Southampton and Everton. The Premier League trio are reportedly seeking a loan deal until the end of the season.
Midfielder Donny van de Beek is another player who impressed with his ball control. Despite winning significantly more appearances than Williams, the midfielder would want a bigger role in the proceedings.
“I think Donny showed his qualities again, his pace,” Solskjaer said of the 23-year-old.
“He’s very clean, technically, he makes good decisions, a little movement with his heel to play Juan [Mata] through the first half.
“He has that quality to open games and he will also benefit from this.”
Solskjaer praises McTominay’s influence
Meanwhile, Scottish international Scott McTominay took the captain’s armband against the Hornets.
He made an explosive start, scoring within five minutes to put the Red Devils in front.
Solskjaer revealed that he wanted to put McTominay to the test by giving him the captaincy and was happy that the academy graduate passed with flying colors.
