Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praised ‘best forward’ Edinson Cavani scored in a 2-0 win over Everton.

The Red Devils started brilliantly at Goodison Park, emulating their performance against Leeds.

But Everton eventually became the party, which made it a more even affair.

The fans had to wait until minute 88 for the first goal. Edinson Cavani was found by his partner Anthony Martial.

He then managed to cut inside before unleashing a brilliant shot that edged goalkeeper Robin Olsen with his left foot.

The Toffees then went to find an equalizer, which he left open in the back.

Marcus Rashford played a major role in a United counterattack and sent Martial on goal.

The Frenchman finished off the play to send his team to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Now they have faced their rivals Man City.

Speaking after the victory, Solskjaer said: “You never know what will happen in football, the first goal always changes games. As long as we were in the game, I knew my substitutes could come in and make an impact.

“Luke [Shaw] he has strength and power on the side, so we tried to change the dynamics of the game.

“Very good start. The first 20-25 minutes we were excellent and we should have been two or three goals up. They made some good saves and then had a hot streak just before halftime, but the last 20 minutes or so we played well.

“He was cautious at times – back and forth and fluid, attacking and defending, but you’re always confident if he opens up a bit with the pace that we have.

“Edinson Cavani should have scored three in the first half, but he is a great striker: his movement, his quality. The goal was excellent ”.

Everton fans could argue that Cavani was lucky to stay on the field after he appeared to lash out at Yerry Mina.

When asked about the incident, Solskjaer replied: “Nothing in it, two South Americans who have had some battles before, faced each other in the America’s Cup qualifiers, so no. This was a soccer game of its own, with fans, tackles, yellow cards and chances on both ends. I loved it.”

Speaking about Man Utd’s chances of winning the cup, Solskjaer stated: “We know that when we defend well we have players to win the game. The spirit in the camp is good, winning gives you energy and gives you a boost, so we are heading towards a positive Boxing Day.

“A semifinal is sometimes worse than the final because it is the worst possible moment to lose a match and leave the competition.”
