REUTERS: Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani has been charged with an aggravated violation of Football Association (FA) rules for using the word “black” in an Instagram post last month.

The 33-year-old Uruguayan had apologized for the post, which he sent after Manchester United beat Southampton 3-2 on November 29, saying it was a warm greeting to a friend.

“Edinson Cavani has been charged with misconduct … in connection with a social media post on Thursday, November 29, 2020,” the FA said in a statement.

“It is alleged that … a comment posted on the Manchester United FC player’s Instagram page was insulting and / or abusive and / or inappropriate and / or discredited the game.

“The comment is further alleged to constitute ‘Aggravated Rape’ … as it included a reference, either express or implied, to color and / or race and / or ethnic origin.”

United issued a statement defending the forward, saying there was no malicious intent behind Cavani’s message.

“Manchester United and all of our players are fully committed to fighting racism and we will continue to work with the FA … in that regard,” said the club https://www.manutd.com/en/news/ Detail / man-utd-respond-to-edinson-cavani-fa-charge-on-17-december? t = y & utm_source = twitter & utm_medium = post & utm_campaign = appandweb & utm_content = cavanicharged20201217.

“Edinson and the club made it clear that there was absolutely no malicious intent behind the message, which he deleted and apologized, as soon as he was informed that it could have been misinterpreted.”

“The player and the club will now consider the position and respond to the FA accordingly.”

Cavani, who is back in training after a muscle injury but still has questions about United’s trip to the Premier League to Sheffield United on Thursday, has until January 4 to answer the charge.
