LONDON: José Mourinho edged out Pep Guardiola in the final chapter of the two coaches’ rivalry when Tottenham beat Manchester City 2-0 on Saturday to go to the top of the English Premier League.
Tottenham took the lead in the fifth minute as the two City centers followed Harry Kane. That opened up a lot of room for Son Heung-min to pick up a high pass from Tanguy Ndombele and score.
City had an overwhelming possession share, but achieved little with it except a goal disallowed for Aymeric Laporte after Gabriel Jesus controlled the ball with his arm in preparation.
Giovani Lo Celso stretched Tottenham’s lead less than 30 seconds after coming off the bench when Kane played him to score on a counter attack in the 65th minute. Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris reacted quickly to avoid Laporte’s header at the end.
On the first anniversary of Mourinho’s appointment, Tottenham are unbeaten in their last eight league games since losing to Everton in the first weekend of the season.
Mourinho’s team are on a four-game winning streak in the league and have become true title contenders just months after finishing outside the top four last season.
Tottenham, who last won the top flight title in 1961 and haven’t lifted a major trophy since 2008, would give up pole position if Leicester beat champion Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
City languish in 10th place, eight points behind the leader after their first loss in 10 games in all competitions.
Pep Guardiola’s shy side looks like a shadow of the arrogant team that won successive league titles in 2018 and 2019.
