Soccer: Tottenham back on top but Liverpool fire alert

LONDON: Tottenham Hotspur regained top spot in the Premier League with a win over Arsenal on Sunday (December 6), but champions Liverpool’s loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers showed that Jurgen Klopp’s side is starting to hit the mark.

Harry Kane scored his 250th career goal for the club and the country after scoring Son Heung-min’s 10th goal of the season in the league when Tottenham beat Arsenal 2-0 to reach 24 points in 11 games.

Shortly after, Liverpool, in their first match with fans at Anfield since winning the title, crushed the Wolves 4-0 with Mohamed Salah, Georginio Wijnaldum and Joel Matip in goal.

A miserable day for the Wolves was crowned when Nelson Semedo scored an own goal.

Liverpool joined Tottenham with 24 points, although José Mourinho’s Spurs have a higher goal difference.

Tottenham also welcomed fans, 2,000 of them, for the first time in 277 days, thanks to the government’s new COVID-19 level 2 restrictions, and they were treated with three points against an Arsenal team languishing in the position 15.

Kane has assisted eight of Son’s goals this season and the duo, who have 18 goals between them, are in irresistible form.

“When I’m passing it and he’s cutting inside and stuffing them into the top bins, it’s an easy game for me,” said Kane, whose goal came from Son’s assist.

In their last three games, Tottenham have beaten Manchester City, tied with Chelsea and beaten Arsenal without conceding, but Mourinho refuses to let go.

“We are at the top of the league for one more week, which is great fun,” said the Portuguese.

Arsenal enjoyed 69 percent possession against Tottenham, but their attack line continues to falter.

They have managed only 10 goals in 11 games and coach Mikel Arteta says the situation is not sustainable.

“We need to get the ball into the net, urgently,” said Arteta, whose team has lost five of its last seven league games. “You look at the statistics, they are all in our favor, but we have to put the ball in the back of the net.”

Liverpool manager Klopp said he got goosebumps hearing fans sing the club’s anthems at the Kop.

“As long as no one tells me that someone was injured, then it was a perfect night,” Klopp said after his team’s 31st win in their last 32 league games at home.

Salah got a starter for an error by Conor Coady and didn’t look back after that.

Jamie Vardy scored a last-gasp win to give Leicester City a 2-1 win over bottom line Sheffield United and lead his team to fourth place with 21 points, one behind Chelsea, who had taken first place. on Saturday after beating Leeds United.

Sheffield United, so impressive last season on their return to the top flight, has one point from 11 games.

Crystal Palace scored five goals in a top flight away game for the first time as they beat West Bromwich Albion 5-1 to move to 11th place.

Wilfried Zaha and Christian Benteke scored twice, although West Brom’s cause was not helped by Matheus Pereira’s dismissal in the 34th minute when he was 1-1.
