LONDON: Liverpool will not stand in the way of youngsters who cannot make the first team and wish to continue their development elsewhere, said coach Juergen Klopp after the club sold Rhian Brewster to Sheffield United.
With stiff competition for a spot in the starting lineup at Anfield, the highly rated 20-year-old forward moved to the Blades for around £ 23.5m, and Liverpool have a three-year buyback option.
“If I’m selfish, that never helps … All young people should know that we don’t keep them here at all costs just to have a solution for one or two games a year. This is not how I work,” Klopp told reporters.
“They need to take some steps in their development and sometimes we are the right place for them to take this development and sometimes they are not.”
Brewster rose to fame in 2017 when he led England to the U-17 World Cup with eight goals, the most of the tournament.
However, surgeries on his ankle and knee halted his progress before the England Under-21 international was loaned to Swansea City last season, where he scored 11 times in the second division championship.
“I need a player in the right place at the right time, so that means he is ready to fight but he has all the tools to fight for the position that the team gives him the opportunity to fight for,” Klopp added.
“That’s really important, especially for a boy like Rhian, who we were 100% worried about during his development (due to his injury) … This is our boy and since I’ve been here, Rhian was here, but unfortunately he got injured. “
