Singapore reports 486 new cases of COVID-19, lower number in part due to fewer tests processed in a lab: MOH

SINGAPORE: Singapore reported 486 new cases of COVID-19 as of noon Monday (May 11), bringing the national total to 23,822.

The vast majority of cases are work permit holders residing in residences for foreign workers, the Ministry of Health (MS) said in its daily preliminary update.

Two cases are Singaporean or permanent residents.

“The lower number of cases today is in part because fewer tests are being processed in a test lab, and you are recalibrating your device for one of the test kits,” said the Health Ministry.

More details of the new cases and more updates will be shared later in the day, the ministry added.

33 “FALSE POSITIVES” IDENTIFIED

The Health Ministry announced Sunday that a “device calibration problem” for one of the test kits in a laboratory resulted in 33 “false positives.”

These 33 cases, including a health care worker at the Singapore Expo Community Care Center, previously tested positive for COVID-19.

“Subsequent tests at the National Public Health Laboratory confirmed that these were negative cases,” said the Ministry of Health, adding that it took immediate measures to rectify the situation.

“The laboratory has stopped all tests and is working to resolve the calibration problem,” the ministry said.

A total of 425 patients were also discharged on Sunday, the highest number of cases discharged in one day in Singapore since the COVID-19 pandemic.
