The launch of the long-awaited air transport bubble (ATB) between Singapore and Hong Kong has once again been postponed to a date to be set, amid rising coronavirus infections in the territory.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) announced the postponement in a press release on Tuesday, days before officials from the two cities were supposed to meet and review when the quarantine-free bilateral travel agreement will begin.
“Singapore and Hong Kong have further reviewed the Covid-19 situation in Hong Kong, and since unrelated local cases remain high, both sides have decided to postpone the start of the Singapore-Hong Kong air travel bubble to beyond December 2020. The exact start date of the ATB agreement will be reviewed at the end of December, “CAAS said in its statement.
This is the second delay, after the ATB was scheduled to launch on November 22, but was stopped at the eleventh hour when Hong Kong began to see a sudden increase in Covid-19 cases. At the time, Hong Kong and Singapore said the travel arrangements would be reviewed within two weeks.
According to the ATB, there would be a two-week hiatus if the seven-day moving average of the daily number of unrelated coronavirus cases is more than five in any of the cities. If the moving average on the last day of the suspension period is five or less, the ATB would resume.
