Cameroon – Telecommunications, mobile telephony and broadband – Statistics and analysis

Cameroon to End Regional Roaming Rates Sydney, Dec 02, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Just released, this edition of the BuddeComm report outlines the latest key developments and trends in the telecom markets. – https://www.budde.com.au/Research/Cameroon-Telecoms-Mobile-and-Broadband-Statistics-and-Analyses/?utm_source=GNW Camtel became the fourth mobile operator in early 2020 after obtaining three licenses. Investment programs among operators over the next few years will significantly boost mobile broadband services in rural areas of the country, many of which are underserved by fixed line infrastructure. The ICT sector in Cameroon is constantly progressing, allowing the country to make better use of the digital economy. Approximately 95% of all electronic transactions are made through the mobile money services operated by MTN Cameroon and Orange Cameroon. The government has also been supportive, as it launched its Cameroon Digital 2020 program, aimed at improving connectivity at the national level. A large number of small ICT projects are part of the overall program. Improved submarine and terrestrial cable connectivity has substantially increased international bandwidth, which in turn has led to reductions in access prices for consumers. BuddeComm notes that the coronavirus outbreak in 2020 is having a significant impact on production and supply chains globally. Over the next year, the telecommunications sector is likely to experience a drop in mobile device production to varying degrees, while it may also be difficult for network operators to manage workflows when maintaining and upgrading existing infrastructure. Overall progress towards 5G may be postponed or slowed down in some countries. On the consumer side, spending on telecommunications services and devices is under pressure from the financial effect of large-scale job losses and the consequent restriction of disposable income. However, the crucial nature of telecommunications services, both for general communication and for home work, will offset these pressures. In many markets, the net effect should be a steady but small increase in subscriber growth. Although it is challenging to predict and interpret the long-term impacts of the crisis as it unfolds, these have been recognized in the industry forecasts contained in this report. The report also covers the responses of telecom operators, as well as government and regulatory agencies as they react to the crisis to ensure that citizens can continue to make optimal use of telecommunications services. This can be reflected in subsidy schemes and promotion of telehealth and tele-education, among other solutions. Key developments: * A new 347km fiber link to Congo begins; * Cameroon will end roaming charges with the Central African Economic and Monetary Community countries from 2021; * Camtel opens a new data center, contracts SatADSL for satellite broadband services, obtains a contract for XAF1.05 billion to connect the Ministry of Education with several universities; * MTN Cameroon receives a GSMA Mobile Money certification; * Camtel Becomes Fourth MNO After Obtaining Mobile Concession; * Orange Cameroon expands LTE services; * MNOs fined for SIM card registration failures; * The national fiber deployment continues with new funds; * The report update includes the regulator’s market report for 2018, telecom companies operating data up to the third quarter of 2020, tables, graphs and analysis of the telecom maturity index, assessment of the global impact of Covid-19 in the telecommunications sector, recent market developments.
