SINGAPORE – Singapore and Germany have agreed on a reciprocal Green Lane (RGL), the German Foreign Ministry (MFA) and the German Federal Foreign Office said in a joint statement on Friday (October 23).

The dates for the lane opening are not yet clear, as ministries say operational details of the RGL, including procedural requirements, health protocols and the application process, will be announced in due course.

Singapore currently has no green lane agreements with any country in Europe, a region that is in the midst of a second wave of coronavirus infection.

“The RGL will allow essential travel for commercial or official purposes through direct flights between the two countries,” the ministries said in a statement.

Eligible applicants, residing in Germany or Singapore, will be required to comply with Covid-19 prevention and public health measures mutually agreed upon by both countries.

Both countries agreed that the RGL could serve as a model for future similar agreements between Singapore and other European countries.

Hong Kong was the last most recent territory with which Singapore made special travel arrangements.

In addition to Germany, Singapore currently has travel agreements with 10 other countries and territories, including Malaysia, China, Japan, and Australia, with various restrictions in place.

On Friday, Germany reported 11,242 new Covid-19 infections, bringing its national count to 403,291 cases. The death toll in the country also increased by 49 to almost 9,954.

Singapore has a total of 57,941 Covid-19 cases, with 28 deaths.

For countries hardest hit by the pandemic, Singapore currently requires travelers to serve a 14-day quarantine at dedicated government facilities and undergo a swab test before their quarantine period ends.
