SINGAPORE: The only community case of COVID-19 from Singapore reported on Monday (December 28) is a Singapore Airlines manager who recently traveled to the United States for work.

It has been classified as a case of local transmission due to a “relatively long time interval” between its trip and the positive test for COVID-19, said the Ministry of Health (MINSA).

The man, who is also a part-time private rental driver with Grab, was found to have the infection through proactive testing of aircrews returning from overseas flights, organized by the Singapore Civil Aviation Authority.

The 48-year-old had traveled to the United States on December 12-16 on a “controlled itinerary,” the Health Ministry said.

She was tested for COVID-19 on December 23, but the result was inconclusive on December 25, requiring another test.

A second test conducted on December 25 was also inconclusive.

The man, who is asymptomatic, had stayed home while awaiting further tests, the Health Ministry said.

On December 27, his swab tested positive for COVID-19 infection and was taken to the National Center for Infectious Diseases the same day.

The man’s serological test result is negative, indicating that he likely has a current infection.

Cabin crew who were on the same United States flight as the man tested negative for COVID-19 on Dec. 23, the ministry added.

“Given the relatively long time interval between his trip and the positive COVID-19 test, we have classified this case as locally transmitted while epidemiological investigations are in progress,” the Ministry of Health said.

Meanwhile, all identified close contacts of the case, including their relatives and co-workers, have been isolated and quarantined, and will be evaluated at the beginning and end of their quarantine period so that we can detect asymptomatic. cases. “

The ministry said it will also conduct serological tests for the man’s close contacts to determine if he could have been infected by them.

Singapore reported a total of 5 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, bringing the national count to 58,529.

Four of them are imported cases that traveled from India, Myanmar and the UK.
