Real Madrid suffered a second surprise defeat in the Champions League to Shakhtar Donetsk to move to third place in Group B.

Real Madrid were looking for a rematch of the surprise 3-2 setback at home in October, but goals in the second half from Dentinho and Solomon surprised them again.

Real have never failed to qualify for the knockout stages of a Champions League campaign in 24 attempts, but they have work to do now, while Shakhtar have a real chance of reaching the knockout stages after climbing to second place.

Borussia Mönchengladbach remain on top despite a 3-2 loss at home to Inter Milan, which also kept alive their hopes of making progress on what promises to be an exciting final matchday.

Matteo Darmian and two from Romelu Lukaku gave Inter the victory, with goals from Gladbach from Alassane Plea.

Liverpool secured their qualification and first place in Group D thanks to a goal from Curtis Jones in a 1-0 victory over Ajax.

A howl from Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana gifted young Jones with his first Champions League goal at Anfield.

Atalanta are second after Cristian Romero annulled Alexander Scholz’s first match in a 1-1 draw with FC Midtjylland.

A late penalty from Thomas Muller earned Bayern Munich a 1-1 draw at Atlético de Madrid, meaning the Spanish team must avoid defeat at Red Bull Salzburg in their final group match to progress.

Joao Félix had put Atlético ahead midway through the first half against a largely second-row Bayern, who had already qualified.

At the other end of Group A, Mergim Berisha scored twice in Salzburg’s 3-1 win at Lokomotiv Moscow.

Manchester City won Group C despite a goalless draw with Porto, which has also ended, while two penalties from Dimitri Payet gave Marseille a 2-1 win over Olympiacos.
