The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has taken enforcement action against a Food Junction booth licensee after a diner found a cockroach in his chili sauce.
Stomper MW He said he visited Yong Tau Foo’s booth at Food Junction – One Raffles Place last Tuesday (December 1), around 1.20pm.
He recounted, “I was nearing the end of my meal and dipping the yong tau foo ingredients into the chili sauce when I realized, ‘How come there is a shiny little thing?’
“It turned out to be a dead cockroach.”
According to MW, the stand’s sweet sauce and chili sauce condiments were already prepared on a tray that customers could serve themselves.
He added: “I feel disgusted and hope they discard the entire batch of chili sauce.
“I felt there was no point in reporting the position, so I Googled the contact number for Food Junction – One Raffles Place management. I called them to come see.
“The management team wanted to reimburse me, but I declined because I was more concerned about the possibility of contracting bacterial food poisoning.
“They also said that they had informed Yong Tau Foo’s stall owner about this matter.”
MW also reported the matter to SFA.
He told Stomp, “I’m glad the OneService app exists to report this nasty matter. I got an email from SFA in no time.”
In response to an inquiry from Stomp, SFA said it inspected the concession stand upon receiving comments.
“We have taken enforcement action against the licensee for a lack of hygiene. We have also reminded him to keep the facilities free of pests at all times and to practice good housekeeping,” added SFA.
“Food safety is a joint responsibility. While the SFA establishes and enforces regulatory measures, food operators must play their role by adhering to good food preparation and hygiene practices.”
Members of the public who come across a potentially errant food operator should report it to SFA through their online comment form. As part of the investigation and evidence gathering, SFA may engage the feedback provider for further details.
SFA also said it will “not hesitate to take enforcement action against errant food operators” if sufficient evidence is obtained.
