SINGAPORE: A recall was issued for two brands of bamboo mushrooms, Xiong Mao Pai and Fei Long Pai, after an unsafe level of sulfur dioxide, an allergen, was detected in samples of the product, the Singapore Food Agency said (SFA) on Thursday (April 30).

Sulfite is commonly used as a food additive and is generally tested as sulfur dioxide.

The two brands of bamboo mushrooms were imported from China by Guangdong Import and Export and Teck Sang, respectively.

SFA has directed both importers to withdraw the affected products.

All batches of Xiong Mao Pai bamboo mushroom are affected, while affected batches of Fei Long Pai bamboo mushroom have better dates prior to November 18, 2021.

Excessive sulfite levels can cause allergic reactions in people who are hypersensitive to the allergen.

“Symptoms include hives, itching, stomach pain, diarrhea and vomiting,” said SFA.

LOTS OF PURE TASSIE FRUIT JUICE REMEMBERED

Meanwhile, a new recall has been issued for several batches of Pure Tassie Organic Apple and Raspberry Juice and Pure Tassie Organic Apple and Blackcurrant Juice after an unsafe level of a toxin called patulin was detected in samples of the products.

A A previous recall was issued on April 21 for a batch of Pure Tassie Organic Apple and Blackcurrant Juice.

SFA has ordered the importer, Cold Storage Singapore, to remove the products.

“The level of patulin detected can make the products unsafe for consumption if there is a long-term intake,” said SFA.

Ingestion of large amounts of patulin from food is associated with nausea, gastrointestinal disorders, and vomiting.

Consumers who bought the affected products should not consume them, and should seek medical attention if they do not feel well.
