SINGAPORE: A member of the secret society involved in a car chase that culminated in a fatal accident in the Istana three years ago pleaded guilty on Tuesday (December 29) to multiple crimes.
Irsyad Sameer Abdul Rahim, 29, admitted to 20 charges, including driving under the influence of methamphetamine, driving in a hurry endangering life, failing to stop when directed by a traffic police officer, being Part of a secret society, ram your car into police vehicles and attack an armed man with a parang.
Another 24 charges will be considered for sentencing.
The court heard that Irsyad was a high-ranking member of an illegal secret society at the time of the crimes. He was arrested in April 2017 for assault and placed on police bail, but committed a large number of trafficking and drug-related crimes in the months that followed.
In June 2017, a traffic police officer spotted Irsyad abruptly changing lanes and crossing the paths of other cars on a highway and instructed him to stop.
However, Irsyad fled at a speed of up to 125km / h, slipping in and out of lanes. Eventually, he had to stop due to heavy traffic and locked himself inside the car, looking dazed.
When the traffic officer broke the car window to secure the ignition key, Irsyad pushed the car forward and swerved to the right, colliding with a stationary truck, before rapidly reversing and colliding with the officer’s motorcycle.
Eventually, two officers detained him and it was discovered that he had methamphetamine and drug utensils in the car. He did not have a valid driver’s license at the time and his urine samples contained methamphetamine.
On December 16, 2017, the Irsyad secret society had a dispute with another illegal group. A fight broke out at the Beacon Club on Raffles Boulevard, but the members dispersed when the police arrived.
When Irsyad’s group gathered in front of Marina Square later that morning, they saw a white car that they suspected contained members of the rival secret society.
Irsyad and the other members of his group surrounded the car, attacking it with their fists and a baseball bat. When those in the vehicle fled, Irsyad and his group went in search of other members of the rival group.
As he circled the area near the Baliza Club with three other men in his car, Irsyad spotted a member of the rival group in a silver Honda on Raffles Boulevard. Some other cars driven by members of Irsyad’s group surrounded the Honda, but the Honda driver managed to maneuver his vehicle through a gap and fled.
Drivers chased after him, chasing the silver Honda from Marina Square to Rochor Road and Bukit Timah Road, leaving the occupants of the silver car in a state of panic, the prosecutor said.
One of the passengers in the Honda spotted uniformed police officers along Cavenagh Road and told the driver to “report for help,” court documents said.
The driver, who had been drinking earlier, turned sharply and slammed the Honda into the rear door of the Istana.
The driver and a passenger suffered serious injuries and died, while another passenger suffered multiple fractures and facial lacerations.
After this incident, Irsyad continued to drive his vehicle without a valid license. He ran away from a police roadblock a few days later because he knew authorities were looking for him, and then sped towards a police vehicle to escape.
He continued to commit more trafficking and drug offenses until he was arrested on April 9, 2018, a few days after failing to show up for a urine test. In all, he had not come for his urinalysis at least 85 times since April 2017.
He will return to court for sentencing on January 19.
