Over the past five months, an 81-year-old man found himself sleeping on a piece of cardboard outside his door, surrounded by ants and cockroaches, due to the amount of scraps that had piled up on his floor.

That was, until volunteers from Keeping Hope Alive, a private initiative aimed at helping the underprivileged, came to clean her apartment on Sunday morning (September 6).

A series of videos posted by the group on Facebook showed a team, dressed in personal protective equipment (PPE), gathered outside the man’s rental apartment along Lorong 5 Toa Payoh, examining piles of debris and debris.

Among the debris were newspapers, wooden planks, chairs, a television, and even bicycles.

In many of the videos, countless cockroaches could be seen running around the apartment, while large rats tried to escape from sight.

Speaking with Lianhe Wanbao, Keeping Hope Alive founder Fion Phua revealed that 35 of them took more than seven hours to clean the apartment.

Due to the large volume of leftovers, the volunteers were unable to enter through the front door and had to enter the apartment through the back door of the kitchen. They then packed everything in large plastic bags before taking them out of the house.

There were a total of 35 bags, Phua added.

“We also captured 12 rats.”

The old man clarified that he was not a hoarder. It simply was unable to sell the leftovers accumulated as a result of Covid-19, he said.

“I didn’t accumulate leftovers on purpose, it’s just that I can’t sell them now, so they’re all collecting them at home. I’m also old and don’t have the strength to clean up,” he told the daily Chino.

To survive, he has 3-in-1 bread or cookies with coffee for his meals. As for sleeping among pests, he said he was “used to it.”

Fortunately for him, he shared that the volunteers not only cleaned his place, but also gifted him a new bed frame and mattress.

“I can finally sleep in a bed! I no longer have to sleep with rats and roaches.”
