SAF will progressively resume NS training at camp, IPPT from October with COVID-19 security measures

SINGAPORE: Training in the National Service Camp (ICT) and Individual Physical Competence Tests (IPPT) will be progressively resumed from October, the Ministry of Defense (MINDEF) said on Thursday (September 3).

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) have implemented safe management measures and health protocols to prevent, detect and contain COVID-19 infections, MINDEF said in a Facebook post.

These measures include swab tests for the returning National Servicemen for ICT at the unit level.

The SAF will also progressively reopen the fitness centers for IPPT beginning October 1.

“The IPPT will be carried out with a reduced capacity and group size, and in accordance with safe management measures to safeguard the health and well-being of users of the fitness centers,” said MINDEF.

All SAF NS members whose IPPT windows close before February 7, 2021 will receive a one-time waiver, the ministry said, adding that those affected will be informed individually via SMS and a letter in September.

“The SAF will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation in Singapore and review the measures in place to keep our military safe,” MINDEF said.

“We thank our NSmen for their continued contributions and commitment to keeping Singapore safe during these difficult times.”

All “non-operations essential” training at the camp has been suspended since March 31, including skills training, live shooting and crew drills.

IPPT, IPPT Preparatory Training (IPT) and Remedial Training (RT) were also discontinued at fitness centers, SAFRA gyms, and IPT-in-the-Park locations.

Some training activities haveit was resumed, including Basic Military Training for new enlisted men and essential training in camp for National Service units, with the necessary safe distancing measures.

SAF has also progressively restarted exercises abroad.
