Roy Keane insists that Manchester United can challenge Liverpool for the Premier League title this season after their magnificent 6-2 win against Leeds on Sunday.
Two goals from Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes, along with a goal from Victor Lindelof and Daniel James, saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side record a sixth Premier League victory in their last seven games and climb to third place in the table.
They also have a game in hand on both sides in front of them and would move just two points behind leader Liverpool if they win.
Speaking full-time, McTominay insisted that he and his teammates were not getting carried away or overly concerned about their position in the league.
But Keane told Sky Sports that he is convinced his former team will start to believe that he has a real chance of pushing Liverpool all the way.
“I don’t think McTominay was there when he said they don’t look at the leaderboards,” he said.
“Everybody looks at the league tables. The players and the staff. That’s what you’re playing for.
“You want to know where you are obviously and where you are going.
“It’s been a nice few days for United. They had to beat Sheffield United and Leeds just to get another score.
“I still think Liverpool are the strongest, but I think United could be the best of the rest.”
United have not won the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson’s last campaign in charge in 2013.
And there is added significance to a potential battle between them and Liverpool in that United have currently won just one top flight title more than their bitter rivals at 20 compared to the Reds’ 19.
United face Everton in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday before a tough Boxing Day game against second-placed Leicester.
